In 1959, we drove through Winchester, and I took this photo. A couple of years later (probably in 1964), we attended the Apple Blossom Festival (Lucille Ball was the parade celebrity). This year when we drove down Route 17, there was a bypass around WInchester.
Winchester was established in 1732 by German, Scottish and Irish settlers heading south from Pennsylvania. It was in Winchester that George Washington began his surveying career. He also built Fort Loudoun. It was George Washington who started Winchester on the track of apple production. He required each tenant to plant 4 acres of apples.
Winchester changed hands 72 times during the Civil War including 13 times in one day. The WInchester cemeteries are the burial place of 7,500 soldiers from the Civil War. There is a monument here to 829 unknown Confederate dead.

That building with the huge apple in front of it is still here in Winchester. It is called Kimberly's Gifts right now! That is neat knowing that is has been there for that much time.
Nice picture of the Big Apple in Winchester. My hubby and I just got a home in Winchester. We closes on it in Sept. And looking forward to moving to our new home. Now we can tell people we live in the Big Apple lol
