Virginia Beach is on the southern side of the entrance to Hampton Roads and the Chesapeake Bay. At the northern end of Virginia Beach Cape Henry and Fort Story are on the point opposite the Virginia Eastern shore. To the west of Virginia Beach is Norfolk and the sprawling town of Chesapeake. We used to live in Norfolk, and we've been to Norfolk many times, but until this last trip, we've basically ignored Virginia Beach.

If you are interested in the history of the area, "Virginia Beach, A Pictorial History" by James M. Jordan and Frederick S. Jordan, 1973 Hale Publishing Co. might be one book for you and another is "The Beach" compiled and revised by the Virginia Beach Public Library. It offers a very complete history and lots of little known facts about the town.

Captain John Smith is perhaps the best known explorer of the region, but actually Admiral Christopher Newport organized the first shore party which landed at Cape Henry. There is a monument to this landing on the present Fort Story.
Believe it or not, in addition to many beach and sporting activities, Virginia Beach has several buildings that are on the Historic Register.

Thank you for the info on the life saving museum. It is now on our things to see list. The book "The Beach" how do I get ahold of it? Joyce
