"Lunch Stop" Coles Point by grandmaR

Coles Point Travel Guide: 4 reviews and 11 photos

My son, DIL and grandchildren came to visit and since my DIL and granddaughter had not been out on the boat, we took a trip across the Potomac for lunch at Coles Point Plantation. We had lunch at the restaurant and then we motored back across to Maryland to our home marina

Coles Point is between Stratford Hall and Port Kinsale at Ragged Point light in the northern neck of Virginia. Hague is the nearest town.

Edward Parker Barnes came to Coles Point in 1882 from the Eastern Shore of Maryland. There were about eight to ten families who lived here then. At that time commerce and travel took place mainly by steamboat links with Washington D.C., Chrisfield and Baltimore.

In 1890, John W. Branson owned much of the land in the Coles Point area. Some was also owned by The Hoskins Lumber Company, manager Edward T. Lutrell. The first church was built in 1891.

One of the few businesses in the area, other than the Coles Point complex is the Oyster House Mart, which opened in April of 1996 in Coles Point. The building which had operated as an oyster house from the 1960's until the early 90's was open 7 days a week from 6:30 am to 7 pm
