"Mid-South Navy Support Activity" Millington by grandmaR

I'm not exactly sure what the Navy Support Activity does, or how the base survived the round of base closures, when so many others were closed. But there it is. There are a good number of chain restaurants, and it is relatively easy to access the attractions of Memphis from here. The base has both the Navy Inn (on the base where you have to go through an inspection at the gate or have a base pass or a military ID), and the Navy Lodge which is not on the base.

The menu of Old Timer's Restaurant explains the history of Millington.

" In 1873, the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad (now called the Illinois Central) built a line late Memphis which happened to go through a small community called Glencoe, an area frequently flooded by Big Creek. Property owner George Millington offered to donate a more elevated tract of land if the settlers would name the settlement after him. In about 1875, to escape flooding and to be near the railroad, the communities of Millwood and Glencoe combined to start the town of Millington.

Like many small towns in America, Millington grew with the depot as the center of activity....Millington was incorporated in 1903."
