Milbourne Borough

My granddad's house
My grandfather lived and worked in a small borough between Philadelphia and Upper Darby for many years. He was a Justice of the Peace (JP) - one of two elected officials in this very small borough (I think the other one was the police chief). He was also a real estate and insurance agent, but his main business was as a JP marrying people.

Milbourne Borough is technically a part of Upper Darby and is in the 26th Senatorial District.

This is his house with my grandmother, me and my little sister dates from the mid 1940s. The house was a duplex, which is pretty typical of the area.
Same house in late 50s
This picture is my dad, my mom and me leaving for the Army Navy game in Philadelphia. My grandmother had died, and my grandfather had remarried. The facade of the house has been 'updated'.

The highway ran in front of the house. Across the street was a big supermarket. The Philadelphia elevated trains ran behind the house at the end of the street. If you walked down that street the Milbourne Fire Department was on the north side, and then you could walk along beside the 'El' tracks to get the train into Philadelphia.

Alternately, you could walk north to Philadelphia (3 blocks across Cobb's Creek) and go to Sears, or go past Sears to the 'El' station that was just past it.

I love the family photos. I've never heard of Milbourne, but I'm sure it's close to me!

The road in front of the house is not US Route 1 ... it is Route 3 (Market Street) into Philadelphia. Route 3 begins in West Chester, as the West Chester Pike.
