"Pegasus but not the Wright Brothers" Kitty Hawk by grandmaR

The painted sculptures that seem to be taking over the country are flying horses for the Outer Banks. This is an amalgamation of the wild horses that live here and the first powered flight which took place near by.

The first flight was in Kill Devil Hills which is near to Kitty Hawk and not IN Kitty Hawk, but the telegraph message about the flight was sent from Kitty Hawk. That's how everyone got confused about it. And this horse is also actually in Kill Devil Hills.

According to the town webpage, ".the origin of the name Kitty Hawk is still a matter of local debate. Most people agree that it is a Native American name for this area. The word originally appeared on English settlers' maps as "Chickehawk" or "Chickahawk" in the early 1700's. By the late 1700's, local residents spelled the name as we do today, with old land deeds referring to settlements as "Kittyhuk," "Kittyhark," KittyHawk," and "Kitty Hawk.""
