Sparrows Point in Baltimore County is on the north bank of the Patapsco. In the 1880's Pennsylvania Steel Company erected the first blast furnaces and built the town of Sparrows Point was built to house the employees. When Bethlehem Steel took over in 1961, it covered 300 acres and produced 672,000 tons of steel a year. Today it is still the largest tidewater steel plant in the United States.
