Anchor in Back Creek

In September 2001, we were expecting friends to come up from Deltaville in their boat and we were going to meet them and go up the Chesapeake Bay together. On 9-11 they came over from the eastern shore to our Marina off the Potomac.

We took them to dinner where they could see the TV reports of 9-11, because of course they got no TV reception on their boat in the middle of the bay.

Afterwards we both sailed up the Chesapeake and anchored in Solomon's Island Back Creek (one of many, many Back Creek's in the Bay area) where we waited out a storm. Charlie, our friend, took the first three pictures of our boat, and I took several of his.

Equipment: The area is nice and sheltered, but you still need to set your anchor well. There were 5 or 6 boats there with us, and we were the only ones that did not drag. Photo 4 shows Charlie checking his anchor - he had to pull it and reset it.

We have a 55 lb. SuperMax anchor and 300 feet of chain, and we did not move.

Anchor near the Museum

One of the anchorages in the Back Creek area of Solomons is right near the museum. It used to be that you could not go to the museum by dinghy - you had to approach by land and pay admission before you could land a dinghy. I think that has changed now.

In any case, this is very protected, and also near to things like grocery stores for provisioning.

Equipment: The anchorage area has been reduced in recent years by the installation of moorings.

Anchored boat - Solomons Island

Anchored boat

Anchor by Moll's Leg

There are lots of boats in Solomons Island. There are marinas. There are repair yards. And there are good places to anchor.

In 'front' of Solomons is the Patuxent River. In 'back' (north) of the island is Back Creek. One place to anchor is up by the Maritime Museum. This is another one. From this one you can dinghy ashore to the Tiki Bar or to 5 or 6 different restaurants.

Equipment: A better anchorage is up Mill Creek. (There are at least 2 Back Creeks and a Back River in various places in the Chesapeake, and at least three Mill Creeks. But this Mill Creek is near Solomons. )

Back Creek has an island called Moll's Leg right in the middle of it. Calvert Marina which has the cheapest fuel is on the other side of Moll's Leg from where we are.

Spring Cove Marina

We met friends of ours who had their boat at this marina a couple of years ago. We have not stayed here ourselves.

The marina web page says:
"Spring Cove Marina is a 246 slip facility on close to 10 acres of property with an abundance of trees, lawns, gardens and natural vegetation, making this one of the most attractive marinas on the East coast. It offers the services and amenities you would expect to find in a first class modern marina, but with the friendliness of a family run business. The location of the Marina could not be more convenient. The Holiday Inn and The Comfort Inn are adjacent north and south, the new Medical Center adjacent to the west, and within a short walk are the Maritime Museum and the Patuxent Plaza. The Plaza contains Woodburns World Class Gourmet Deli, West Marine, Post Office, Liquor Store, Fast Food and more. "

Equipment: Dockage Rates

$1.80/ft In Season
Memorial weekend thru
Labor Day
$1.60/ft May and September"
$1.35/ft In the Off Season
$4.00/30amp electric surcharge
. Laundry facilities are also available.
The Ship's Store has a wide variety of Gifts, Clothing, Marine items, Souvenirs, Groceries and snacks. Block and cube ice are available and there is a cube ice dispenser for 24 hour convenience.
