Seahorse painted by Calvert County children
My son and granddaughter pose with the seahorse outside the Calvert Marine museum. This one is painted with various Maryland and Solomons Island icons (What shows on this side is sharks teeth, lighthouse, jellyfish, Maryland flag, a ray, and a Baltimore Oriole - the bird). The US flag is on the other side. This sculpture is titled "Horsin' Around in Maryland" and it was designed by the students at Dowell Elementary
Sail andRiggers loft exhibit in the Calvert Museum
Isaac Solomon moved from Baltimore to the island, later named for him (the former name was Sandy Island), to be closer to the big oyster reefs in the Chesapeake. He had developed a process for canning oysters. He shipped them as well. Solomon's Island is on the north side of the Patuxent.

Solomons is just across the Patuxent from us, and we visit it fairly often by car, and occasionally by boat.

This is an exhibit at the Calvert Marine museum of a Sail/Rigger's Loft. The sign says: "Rigging is the system of tackle, lines and stays which support and control a vessel's masts and sails. The rigger was the person who fitted the rigging and often shared the loft with the sailmaker - sailmakers also needed a large unobstructed workspace."
Mega Shark at the Marine Musuem
At the Calvert Maritime Museum, you can see the Drum Point lighthouse, which was moved to the museum grounds, and take the harbor ride on the Wm. B Tennison, an 1899 Bugeye.

This picture was taken of a ancient shark jaw by one of my grandsons with the camera I gave him to use on the 2002 trip he took with my husband to the Calvert Marine Museum. You can better judge the size of this exhibit by looking at the museum travelogues where there are some pictures with people standing in front of it.

I can't believe I don't know this place after many trips to the coast of Maryland and lived in my young days in DC. Thanks for educating me.
