"Webster Field" Saint Inigoes Shores by grandmaR

Saint Inigoes Shores Travel Guide: 1 reviews and 4 photos

The Saint Mary's River is a beautiful small river that flows into the Potomac. The headwaters are in the Great Mills area and the only community of any size on it is St. Mary's City which was the first capitol of Maryland.

The only scenery other than the woods homes and farms on the shores of the river is this small Navy base at the old Webster field. It is at the site of St. Inigoes manor which was granted to Jesuit missionaries in 1636.

The name was in honor of St. Ignatius, the Spanish founder of the Jesuit order. The first post office in the area was established in 1801.

The cornerstone of the present church was laid in St. Inigoes on July 13, 1785. If you visit, be sure to pick up the key from the Naval Base guard post next door so you can tour the inside of this beautiful and historic church.. The church also has a large cemetery

There is also a Coast Guard station which was dedicated in 1976 under the control of Coast Guard Activities Baltimore. The unit's official motto is "Guardians of the Potomac."

Cross Manor, a home which is now on the Historic Register that dates back to the 1600s is also in St. Inigoes.

I question whether the name of this community is St. Inigoes or - like VT has it - is Saint Inigoes Shores.

In June of 2003, while driving down to the marina, we saw a boat like ours anchored when we drove by Horseshoe Bend in St. Mary's City. So when we took the boat out for the first time since we came back after Bob's heart attack in the Exumas - April 2002, we decided to sail up the St. Mary's River and see whether we knew the people. The three pictures here were taken at that time.
