St. Joseph's Cemetery

Like many local communities, Morganza took its name from one of the prominent local families - the Morgans. George H. Morgan, the community's first postmaster owned the land where the present St. Joseph's Church now stands. Rev. John A. Morgan was born on a farm near the first St. Joseph Church in 1838. He served as president of St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia and then as the president of Loyola College in Baltimore.

Morganza consists of a post office/general store, St. Joseph's church, and two cemeteries at the junction of Maryland Rt. 5 (Point Lookout Road), Maryland Route 242 (Colton Point Rd.), Morganza Turner Road, and Busy Corner Road. There is also one of the counties three high schools (Chopticon) about a mile down Colton Point Road.

Stauffer's farm

This is an Amish farm which is next to the church. How can you tell it is Amish? There are no telephone line, no electrical lines, and no cable TV lines. The Amish are off the grid. They don't use electricity from the electric company, and the don't have phones at their homes (although they do walk out to the road to use pay phones).

The two big barns are tobacco barns. Tobacco barns are traditionally not painted. The sides have alternating slats which can be propped out to allow the tobacco to dry. A wintertime occupation for families that raise tobacco is 'stripping' the tobacco.

Tobacco barns have been designated as endangered recently.
