Leonardtown's new Wharf sign
Leonardtown held its first Waterfront Celebration on Sept. 13, at the new Wharf complex. IN the past there was a bar here over the water and an ice house and fuel depot at the bottom of the road. Now there is a dock and bathrooms, and There is a building there and I've been told that it is open on weekends to rent kayaks.
Boats can tie up at the wharf which at low tied has about 5 feet of water, but there is no electricity available, although there are bathrooms, and there is no charge for it.
The $5.5M public park that is under development at the Wharf will ultimately include a kayak landing. It is also hoped that one day the waterway improvement funds, which include $200,000 to help finance construction of piers, tie-ups and slips for boats, canoes and kayaks as the Leonardtown Wharf Public Waterfront Park will mean that they can rent also rent kayaks at the McIntosh Run location. At the present, I think you have to take your kayak on the top of your car or in your truck
Equipment: The town bought the old State Roads garage at the head of McIntosh Run and demolished the buildings there. The launch ramp that is now there enables sportsmen to kayak down McIntosh Run for a 3 mile trip that terminates in Breton Bay at the Leonardtown Wharf. This goes through a little known bird sanctuary.

Hill from end of bypass (old road to Leonardtown)
A couple of days a year they run the Soap Box Derby trials on this hill. The cars start up in Leonardtown, and the finish is up by our house. They can block this road off to traffic because most of the traffic can go around on the bypass.
Equipment: Soap Box Derby - The Soap Box Derby program is designed as a parent-child program and is under the rules of the All-American Soap Box Derby. A parent/guardian or adult is expected to help in the construction of the car. The adult must not build the car for the child, but share this experience by being supportive and giving help only when needed. This program is meant to be an enjoyable learning experience for both parent/guardian and child, and provide them with the opportunity to develop mutual respect and trust, and demonstrate the importance of individual pride and sportsmanship.
The age limit is nine through 16 years. At present, the Office of Community Services has two soapbox racers sponsored by the Lion’s International and the Ridge Lion’s Club.
