"A Wide Spot in the Road" Callaway by grandmaR

Callaway Travel Guide: 4 reviews and 13 photos

There's never been much to Callaway. It's between Leonardtown and Great Mills on Route 5. When we moved here in 1973, there was a Texaco station/general store, Hewitt's Lumber and some kind of antique shop.

Now Callaway isn't much bigger. The gas station/general store has changed to a Shell Quik Stop. Hewitts warehouse was hit by lightening and burned down. They were eventually driven out of business by Lowes, 84 Lumber etc.

Now in Callaway in addition to the Shell/Quik Stop and a new traffic light, there is an A&W Restaurant and gas station, Bear Creek BBQ and across the street a small shopping center with a Food Lion and a big fake lighthouse in one corner.

We happen to own this Mountain Mudd Kiosk ... which is one of four we own in St Mary's County. Come on by fro some great lattes, and frozen drinks (granitas). Other locations include Lexington Park, California and Charlotte hall.
