California is a postal area (Zip code: 20619) in St. Mary's County south of Hollywood, and north of Scotland. The population (year 2000): 9,307 and the area is 12.9 square miles. There's not much to take photos of there. It's about 12 miles from my house.

The story about how California got its name is a bit blurred by time. Some say that a family that settled in the area was from California and used materials (either wood or bricks that had been used as ballast in the ship) from their home state to build their home or the chimneys of their home which they then called "California Farmstead". In any case when the post office was established in 1874, that was the name that was chosen.

One of the big shopping centers in California is San Souci. San Souci has 2 Mexican restaurants (if you count Taco Bell), an Italian pizza and sub place (Subway), a Chinese restaurant, a Japanese restaurant, and an Indian restaurant. We haven't eaten in the pizza place or the Indian restaurant. The Mexican place is VERY popular.

A lot of the stuff that's really in California has a Lexington Park PO address so check Lexington Park for other restaurants in this area. Some of the San Souci restaurants have California addresses and some have Lexington Park addresses. The California PO is in this shopping center.

Some of the Wildewood Shopping Center restaurants have a California PO addresses, so check Wildewood (Wildewood is a planned community on Maryland Rte. 235 (Three Notch Road) near the intersection with Maryland Rte. 4).
