Sailboat following us down the Patapsco - Baltimore

Sailboat following us down the Patapsco

Sailing to the Chesapeake Sailing - Chesapeake Bay Review

In one day you can sail the Patapsco River from the Inner Harbor to the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay. If your schedule allows more time you can set sail for one of the many wonderful cruising destinations on the Chesapeake Bay such as Rock Hall, Swan Creek, Annapolis, Bodkin Creek and St. Michael's.

In 1999 we took a cruise from the Patuxent up to Baltimore and back. The pictures are in an album.

The boat in the picture didn't go all the way out to the Chesapeake with us. They chickened out and turned back.

Equipment: You can go on your own boat as we did, or you can charter a boat or go on a cruise with a paid crew.

Getaway Sailing (which I have not used) has a
$250 per person for 2 night cruises. $300 per person for 3 night cruises.

A 50% non-refundable deposit is due at time of reservation.
A 4 participant minimum and 6 participant maximum applies.

Raven's Stadium Football - Raven's Stadium Review

When I was a kid, the football team in Baltimore was the Colts and the quarterback was Johnny Unitas. (I saw him in person once buying a suit in Schwartz Bros.) Then the Colts snuck out of town. The first new stadium in Baltimore (much admired) was Oriole Park (at Camden Yards). But we didn't have a football team and not much of a football stadium anymore either..

So the Cleveland Browns left Cleveland and came to Baltimore. This made Clevelanders annoyed. There was a contest to name the team, and the Ravens was picked because of Poe's 1845 poem "The Raven".

1st verse: Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
"'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door-
Only this, and nothing more."

10th verse: But the raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing further then he uttered- not a feather then he fluttered-
Till I scarcely more than muttered, "other friends have flown
before-
On the morrow he will leave me, as my hopes have flown before."
Then the bird said, "Nevermore."

15th verse: "Prophet!" said I, "thing of evil- prophet still, if bird or devil!
By that Heaven that bends above us- by that God we both adore-
Tell this soul with sorrow laden if, within the distant Aidenn,
It shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore-
Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore."
Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore."

16th verse "Be that word our sign in parting, bird or fiend," I shrieked,
upstarting-
"Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore!
Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken!
Leave my loneliness unbroken!- quit the bust above my door!
Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my
door!"
Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore." )

Equipment: Poe is buried near the stadium (He died first).

As part of the deal, a stadium was built. Originally this was PSI Net Stadium. And it had purple all over it, because the PSI colors and the Raven's colors were purple. Then PSI went bankrupt or something, and it's now the M&T Bank Stadium. Their colors seem to be green and white. But the Raven's colors are still purple and gold.

One of the ways they have raised money for this stadium is by Permanent Seat Licenses.

Mounted police at the Eco-Day - Baltimore

Mounted police at the Eco-Day

Herring Run Hiking & Biking Review

The Herring Run Watershed Association has an Eco-Day fund raiser every year.

[A run is a small stream or creek, often a shallow or intermittent tributary to a river. Also called regionally branch, brook, or kill].

They do stream cleanups at the eco-day, but they primarily have a 5K run (the other kind of running), and a walk.

In addition to the run, they also have exhibits on water quality, trash removal, sewage treatment, a swap meet, speeches and music. When I took this picture, they also had some mounted police patrol horses. We participated in this for two years by driving Bob's electric car and exhibiting it on the field and giving out literature.
