Hampton Inn Garden District: On the Streetcar Line Hampton Inn Garden District - St. Charles Avenue New Orleans Review
Show Prices

I took this photo from the streetcar, so you can see that the hotel really is right by the streetcar line. The windows of the streetcar were foggy, so it was difficult to get clear pictures.

I have not stayed here, but AAA gives it three diamonds and calls it a small scale hotel..

Unique Qualities: 100 newly constructed guest rooms features 25" color television with cable and HBO, hair dryers, irons and ironing boards, coffee makers, voice mail, and dataports on phones. Daily Continental breakfast buffet (lobby or pool), free local telephone calls and incoming faxes, tea and cheese reception, turn down service and free parking. They have a lap pool

Address: 3626 Saint Charles Ave, New Orleans, LA 70115

Directions: 3 miles from the French Quarter with the St. Charles Streetcar stopping just outside the front door.

New Orleans Grand Palace: Not so Grand? New Orleans Grand Palace Hotel Review

I have not stayed in this hotel.

When I looked at the VT list of hotels and their addresses, the address corresponded to that of the Crecent on Canal. So that's where I listed it.

On the internet, I found:

Rid of its rodents, hotel asks to reopen
Health department to make case to judge

Friday, December 03, 2004
By Leslie Williams
Staff writer for the Times-Picayune

"The New Orleans Grand Palace Hotel, ordered closed more than a week ago, has apparently solved its rodent problem and likely will reopen today. "

The hotel is north of I-10 and is a half mile from the Superdome and 8 blocks from the French Quarter, although the Canal Street streetcar runs right down Canal Street. It has the same address as a hotel called Crescent on Canal.

Unique Qualities: Our newly refurbished rooms are all oversized and feature coffee makers, in-room movies and video games, in-room safes for your comfort in the Big Easy. Valet parking is provided for your convenience.

Self parking: $10 per 24-hour period.

Penelope’s - Serves a daily Continental breakfast (surcharge).

Bob walking across Lee Circle - New Orleans

Bob walking across Lee Circle

Hotel Le Cirque: On Lee Circle Hotel Le Cirque Review
Show Prices

I have not stayed here. AAA gives it a three diamond rating, but it is not an AAA approved hotel.

It is right on the circle where the St. Charles streetcar line goes, and they advertise that they are "New Orleans' hottest and hippest new property, located in the Arts District, within easy walking distance to the Convention Center..." I am not sure that people will want to walk to some of these places at night and there is considerable disagreement about the "hippest" and "new".

There is a fairly stuff charge for parking - over $18/day plus tax. There are also other charges such as for a safe ($3) and for a phone ($5).

Unique Qualities: Among other things, the hotel advertises
# Adjacent to a full service gym with swimming pool, running track and basketball court

One of the reviews says "there is no paper delivery, no complimentary car/shuttle, no restaurant, no bar, no gym, no pool, no basketball court, no robes, no limo or driver. It appears that some of these things did once exist, but I was told by the staff that some are gone and some of them are only offered during peak times of the year."

Huge clarinet from tour bus

Holiday Inn NEW ORLEANS-DOWNTOWN, LA: Follow the Clarinet Holiday Inn Downtown Superdome Review

I have not stayed at this hotel, but I took a picture from the tour bus of the big clarinet on the side of the building. I thought it was a model, like the guitars that are on the Hard Rock Cafes, but I think it is really a mural.

Bob walking under the Fairmont's decorated ceiling - New Orleans

Bob walking under the Fairmont's decorated ceiling

Fairmont Hotel New Orleans: Decorated for Xmas The Roosevelt New Orleans, A Waldorf Astoria Collection Hotel Review
Show Prices

Due to Hurricane Katrina, this hotel is closed through Sept 2006.
-----------------------------

This hotel is next to the hotel where we are staying, and is decorated for Christmas including a little diorama with two bears in a little cottage (inset). It was a very cold day, and I thought we might eat dinner there - it was too cold to walk very far. But it was far too elegant for us (and also too expensive). The photo shows the ceiling of the entrance, with Bob just at the bottom of the left side.

It is not in the French Quarter, but the AAA rates it as a Large-Scale Hotel and gives it four red diamonds. It has two entrances - one on Baronne and one on University.

Unique Qualities: The tradition of hospitality at this hotel (according to their website):
.. began in 1893, when the Grunewald Hotel, a 200-room, six-story hotel named for owner Louis Grunewald, opened on Baronne Street near the fabled French Quarter. Grunewald added a 400-room, 14-story annex in 1908, now the hotel's main entrance. He also opened what is believed to be America's first nightclub. Called The Cave, this subterranean supper club featured waterfalls, stalactites and chorus girls dancing to Dixieland jazz. The hotel was later sold to a syndicate of New Orleans business leaders who renamed the hotel The Roosevelt in honor of Theodore Roosevelt. During this period, the hotel acquired the rights to the Ramos Gin Fizz, as well as the Sazerac Cocktail, a creation of The Fairmont New Orleans' Sazerac Restaurant and Bar.

During its reign as The Roosevelt, the hotel flourished under the leadership of owner and general manager, Seymour Weiss. Weiss was an elegant Cajun who became friends with famed politician Huey P. Long. Long established his campaign headquarters in the hotel and moved in shortly after winning the election. Governor Long spent so much time at the hotel, Louisiana lore has it that he even built a 90-mile highway directly from the state capital in Baton Rouge to The Roosevelt. Even today, a right turn upon leaving the hotel will put you on Highway 61 straight to Baton Rouge.

The Roosevelt became known as The Fairmont New Orleans in 1965.

Chateau LeMoyne Holiday Inn: One Block from Bourbon Street Holiday Inn Chateau Lemoyne French Quarter Review

I have not stayed in this hotel. I took the photo while we were walking around the French Quarter on our first evening, and I was not even aware that it was a hotel until I went to look up the Cafe Bienville which is part of it.

The AAA gives it three approval diamonds (small scale hotel) and a double is between $109 and $329/night, depending on the season

Unique Qualities: valet parking and heated outdoor pool.

Quarter House entrance - New Orleans

Quarter House entrance

Quarter House Resort: IN the French Quarter Quarter House Resort Review

I have not stayed in this hotel, which is also a time-share. We dropped some folks off here after one of the tours we took, and I was offered this hotel as an alternate to a reservation I made in Mississippi but I didn't particularly want to stay in New Orleans post-Katrina.

POST KATRINA NOTE: This hotel is open and accepting reservations. They have not reduced their rates but there are a limited number of weeks available for sale -- Foreclosures with prices as low as $4,900.

Unique Qualities: They are no longer advertising an internet rate of less than $100/night for 3 nights. The least expensive rate for a one bedroom suite is $225/night plus tax. The 1-bedroom suite features 1 full bath and a fully-equipped kitchen -- accommodates up to 4 people. The two bedroom suite with one bath (6 people) is $375/night and with two baths is $300/night.

The website says Each suite has its own completely furnished kitchen, dishes, linens, private Jacuzzi bath or walk-in shower with European shower heads, color television, DVD players, and everything you need to enjoy a relaxing vacation in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Hi-speed wireless internet connections are available in all rooms.

Our guests also enjoy private telephone service, a courtyard swimming pool, maid service, laundry facilities, and concierge services.

To top off your stay with us enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and on Sunday evenings enjoy complimentary wine and cheese ... both served in our lush tropical courtyard..

Doubletree Hotel New Orleans: Near Harrah's Doubletree Hotel New Orleans Review
Show Prices

I didn't stay at this hotel. I did take two pictuers of it - once from the streetcar, and once from a tour bus. The AAA calls is a three diamond recommended Large Hotel.

There is a fee for parking (Valet Parking: $28.00 Limited Availability) and for hi-speed internet. They give a range of between $89 and $345/night for a single or a double all year round.

Unique Qualities: It looks like from my pictures that it is right near Harrahs and therefore also near the ferry to Algiers, the Aquarium and the Canal Street Streetcar, and would be right across the neutral ground from the French Quarter.
