The City of Vero Beach was originally incorporated in 1919 as the City of Vero but in 1925 it was re-incorporated as the City of Vero Beach and was transferred from St. Lucie County to Indian River County. In 2001, the City had a populations of 17,900. All traditional city services such as police, public works, and recreation are provided and in addition, the City of Vero Beach operates an electric generation plant, electrical distribution system, water and sewer plants, solid waste collection department, airport and marina.

The Los Angeles Dodgers baseball organization uses a developed site, called Dodgertown, located near the Vero Beach Airport. Dodgertown is used by the Dodgers and its various farm club teams for spring training. This facility includes several practice baseball diamonds, the Holman Stadium, dining facilities, locker rooms, equipment rooms, and a 9-hole golf course. Dodgertown is also used for conventions

Vero Beach Marina is located on the East side of the Indian River, just north of the Barber Bridge. Over 3,000 visiting boats pass through Vero Beach each year. Rental slips are available on a day-to-day and month-to-month basis. Shoreside facilities include a laundromat, lounge, bicycle and vehicle parking, restrooms, trash disposal and a park.
