"Ft Taylor - Key West's hidden park" Fort Taylor by grandmaR

Fort Taylor Travel Guide: 3 reviews and 13 photos

The picture shows a cruise ship leaving Key West as it goes past the moat around the fort. In the foreground is a skeleton sculpture (Pirates) which appears to be waving goodbye. This is my favorite picture of the fort. I don't have as many good pictures of this as I do Ft. Jefferson (Dry Tortugas).

History

Fort Taylor was on the Naval Base when we lived in Key West. Restoration was begun in 1968 at the end of Bob's tour of duty when we were about ready to leave the island.

Bob's niece was married at Ft. Taylor. Since we never knew about Ft. Taylor when we lived here, we thought she meant that she had been married at the Martello Towers. But she was actually married here. So we decided to visit.

Admission is $4 per carload to the park. We paid and went in, and walked around on top of the fort walls, and I took pictures. We saw two cruise ships leave, and we could see the sailboat races off in the distance.

I almost missed that skeleton. Sounds a nice place for a family visit.
