"Somerset Bridge & The Old Royal Naval Dockyard" Sandys Parish by grandmaR

Sandys Parish Travel Guide: 18 reviews and 97 photos

Sandy's Parish is at the other end of Bermuda from St. George's Island. It includes Somerset Island (named after the English county of Somerset). It also includes Boaz Island, Ireland Island and Watford Island. They are all connected by bridges and serviced by buses and ferries.

It was named in honor of one of Bermuda's Elizabethan patrons, English aristocrat Sir Edwin Sandys (1561-1629). He was the second son of the Archbishop of the city of York in England

One notable thing in Sandy's is the tiny Somerset Bridge which allows the mast of a sailboat to pass through. This is Bob in 1963 on the bridge by the Sandy's Rectoy (Bridge House) which is in an Off the Beaten Path Tip.

The last island in Sandy's Parish is Ireland Island. The Royal Dockyard is out there - it wasn't possible to tour it in 1963 when I went there first because it was still in use as a dockyard. But we did go in 1995, and again in 2004..
