The Heritage Court: Near the Koi Pond

  • Restaurant Name: The Heritage Court

In 1995, we ate here the first night because reservations were not needed. We discovered that iced tea is a 'drink' and is not included in the regular menu, but hot tea IS included. Iced tea is apparently a drink because it has ice.

We enjoyed eating here, but after that we had hot tea.

We never did get back here for afternoon tea though and we didn't dine in this restaurant during our 2004 visit.

Every morning at the Hamilton Princess..

Favorite Dish: we had a breakfast buffet while enjoying the view of the harbor. The breakfast buffet was quite extensive, but I no longer remember exactly what it consisted of. I remember I could have cranberry juice which was brought by a waiter. They also had a chef-type person cooking eggs to order, cereals, fruit and rolls.

The Thanksgiving buffet was also wonderful on Thursday night. (Their interpretation of a tradition Thanksgiving meal was a little different but good)

The White Horse: A St. George Pub

Since we had the American plan which included breakfast and dinner, we usually only ate lunch out. This pub is right on the square in St. George so it is ideally situated for lunch.

It has seating right outside on the canal for good weather. They have the typical Bermuda shutters on the window. We ate there in 1995.

I have found out from information on the internet that this place may now serve pizza, and/or that it was out of business for a time.

Favorite Dish: Most people seem to love this place. Bob ordered a hamburger and I ordered a Ploughman's lunch. I didn't know what that was, but it sounded interesting.

The service was terrible, I thought the prices were high, and I hated the food. I found out later that I don't like the stuff in a Ploughman's lunch.

But Bob didn't like his hamburger much either, and there wasn't much of what food there was. We were still hungry at the end of the meal. We fed the ducks and minnows in the canal with most of it. They didn't seem all that surprised to be fed.

Cafeteria at the Botanical Gardens: Lunch Bunch

  • Restaurant Name: Cafeteria at the Botanical Gardens

Since we had breakfast and dinner included in with our hotel price as MAP, we only needed to figure out where to eat lunch.

The first day when we went to the Dockyard, we ate at the Clocktower Mall at a place which was sort of like a cafeteria. It was a wet rainy day and the places was packed to the gills. It wasn't cheap, but it wasn't super expensive either.

Favorite Dish: The second day we ate at the White Horse in St. George. We both hated the food there - again not cheap, and very little of it.

So the third day, we stopped at a bakery and bought rolls and something to drink intending to have a picnic at the Botanical Gardens (which was where we were headed). Quite by accident we discovered that the Botanical Gardens had a good and inexpensive cafeteria. So we ate both the cafeteria food and the food we'd bought.

    Hog Penny: Hamilton's Oldest Pub
  • Tip Rating:

  • Bermuda - Hogge Money explanation on the menu
  • Hogge Money explanation on the menu
  • by grandmaR , 4 more photos

  • Restaurant Name: Hog Penny

On their menu, the Hogge Penny says that it was established in 1957 from the old Watney's pubs. Some of the mirrors and benches date back to the early 1900's. The Hog Penny is supposed to have been the original inspiration for the Cheers' Pub in Boston (which in turn inspired the TV show).

The pub is named after the old Bermuda money - Governor Daniel Butler in his 1620 account "The Historye of the Bermdaes or Summer Islands", was given its name because of it "having a hog stamped upon it on one side (in memory it should seem of the great number of wild swine found upon the Islands at their first discovery in 1609..)"

The penny in Bermuda still has a hog on one side.

Favorite Dish: The Hog Penny came to my attention when Rachael Ray ate dinner there on her $40/day show on the Food Network. She had Chicken Marsala curry which was $18.95. The Hog Penny was also on the NCL Freestyle Dining Ashore options, but I didn't think I wanted to pay $10 for a coupon worth $50, and only get a $20 entree.

We looked at the Freestyle manu which was either a salad or fish chowder as the starter, Steak and Kidney Pie, Saltimboca Chicken, Dark and Stormy Rockfish or Chili Flatiron Steak as a main entree and brownies with ice cream for dessert.

But they had the Upper Crust Supper ($46.00 including a $6.00 service charge for a 3 course dinner). This was a special 3 course dinner promotion on Sunday through Thursday night. The server said they started this promotion in October.

As a starter, I had onion soup and Bob had salad. For the main course, I had Beef Wellington (pictured) which was a 5 oz. filet mignon nested in puff pastery with duxelle of mushrooms and liver pate topped with perigourdine sauce and served with baked and mixed vegetables. Bob had Salmon Phyllo - herb crusted Atlantic salmon fillet served on a phyllo basket in wine butter sauce served with coconut milk basmali rice and sauteed vegetables, and we both had the Granny Smith apple pie with ice cream (pictured) and drank iced tea.

We could also have chosen a Traditional Stead and Kidney Pie, Chicken Cordon Bleu or Pork Schnitzel.

In the picture is also the Hog Penny design on the plates (center)

    Harley's Terrace: Hamilton Princess
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Harley's Terrace

I don't remember exactly where we ate in 1963, except that we ate in a restaurant in a hill - a former ammunition storage area somewhere around St. George.

But in 1995, I know we ate our dinners in the Hamilton Princess because we had a modified American Plan which included breakfast and dinner.

One of the restaurants at the Hamilton Princess is Harley's

When we came by cruise ship, we got one $10 voucher to eat dinner ashore, and I wanted to get the maximum cost meal that I could from it. I figured that the Hamilton Princess would be the ideal place to do that. So we walked up there. And I was right. It was expensive.

    Hours of Operation:
    (Weather permitting and seasonal)
    Breakfast: 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
    Sunday Brunch: 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
    Lunch: 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
    Pool Service: 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
    Dinner: 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

    Reservations:
    Reservations recommended

Favorite Dish: Note that the restaurant menus for the Freestyle dining (from NCL) are not the whole menu that are available to hotel guests and other diners. There are a limited number of dishes available.

I had a 16 oz. prime rib which was delicious (but I couldn't eat it all and I couldn't take it back to my room and keep it for lunch the next day), which was listed on the menu at $29.50. I also had a Waldorf salad which was also delicious and a chocolate mousse with ice cream which listed for $8.50. Bob a shrimp pasta dish ($29.00) and fish chowder. He gave me a taste, and it tasted like I expect fish chowder to taste.. I can't remember what he had for dessert but it would have been $8.00. We drank tea, and everything including the tips were included.
