South Carolina State Flag - South Carolina

South Carolina State Flag

South Carolina Flag

Favorite thing: I've always like the South Carolina flag which is attractive, symbolic and unique. I've often taken photos of the moon in conjunction with a palm tree because I thought it was beautiful.

The State Tree: The palmetto, South Carolina's state tree, grows in coastal areas of North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. It has played an important part in the history of the state and appears on the state seal as well as the flag.

The State Flag: The white silhouette of the crescent moon and palmetto tree stand in sharp contrast to the midnight blue background. The crescent represents the silver emblem worn on the caps of South Carolina's First and Second Continental Regiments in the Revolutionary War. The palmetto tree was added later to honor the 28 June 1776, patriot victory at a palmetto log fort on Sullivan's Island.

Fondest memory: Asked by the Revolutionary Council of Safety in the fall of 1775 to design a flag for the use of South Carolina troops, Col. William Moultrie chose a blue which matched the color of their uniforms and a crescent which reproduced the silver emblem worn on the front of their caps. The palmetto tree was added later to represent Moultrie's heroic defense of the palmetto-log fort on Sullivan's Island against the attack of the British fleet on June 28, 1776.

The defeat of the British was due to a number of factors:

1) The British fleet did not have anyone familiar with Charleston harbor, and their information was sorely lacking as they did not take the large tides into account, and were relying on local pilots

2) The fort built of earth and palmetto trees just absorbed the British cannon fire without crumbling.
