I've been to Louisiana five times, and none of those times have I been there during Mardi Gras. Once I visited New Orleans around Easter when I was a school child.

Once I lived in the Bayou country from June to November as a young married person. I did quite a bit of reading about Huey Long and the Cajans.

My next visit was December 2004 when I revisited all the places I'd been the first two times and then some more.

The following year, we drove through Louisiana on the way to Texas. And our final visit was in January 2008

If you think of Louisiana as a boot, up to 2008 I have only been along the sole of the boot. I have not been to Baton Rouge, the state capitol. I've seen two major Rivers - Mississippi River, and the Atchafalaya River, and one major lakes - Lake Pontchartrain. Our visit in 2008 we went to Baton Rouge and Shreveport.

Louisiana was named by the French explorer Sieur de La Salle in 1682 to honor King Louis XIV (14) of France. The State Nickname is Sportsman's Paradise (previously - Pelican State)
