Narrowboat Lifestyle

Canals were built so that narrowboats could be used to move industrial goods like coal, and manufactured goods before the railroads were build and when the roads were often difficult or impassible.

For the start of the cruise see Droitwich, and for the middle see Worcester.

Canal near TIbberton

Not much commercial narrowboat traffic is on the canals now, but there are both hire boats like the one we have, and private boats. The private boats are often gaily painted, and the boat people have painted tinware like in the top picture. This picture shows a boat on a private mooring, and beyond the bridge is a boat going through a section of the canal where the reeds have encroached on each side.

After Tibberton

Between Dunhampstead and Tibberton there are no locks, only bridges. After TIbberton, the locks start.

Water is level with water in the lock, so the gates can be opened. The paddle mechanism is the wheel mechanism at the top of the gates. Both paddles are raised - you can tell by the stakes at the top of the gates are sticking up.
