Bow of Cutty Sark with Bob
Gypsy Moth
In 1979, my husband Bob retired from service in the US Navy after 20 years. While he was in the Navy, he visited England as a midshipman on summer cruise, and then again in the winter of 1961-62 when his group did joint operations with the British Navy. (It was on that trip that the keel of the aircraft carrier he was on was broken in the North Sea - after that the carrier was scrapped). He had seen the H.M.S. Victory (although I had not).

When I was planning the trip, I saw a Rick Steves presentation where he advocated taking a boat down the river to Greenwich on Sunday to visit the Maritime Museum and the Prime Meridian. I thought that was a great idea and that it would be something Bob would like. So I planned a visit to Greenwich for our last day in London (a Sunday).
Prime Meridian
I decided to ride the Docklands Light Rail down, and ride the Thames boat back because I thought that would be most relaxing after we were tired out from museuming.

Everything worked out very nicely, except that I thought we could get to the Thames Barrier from Greenwich by boat, and apparently you can't do it that way.

Then when I went to write up the trip, I found that there was no VT location for Greenwich. It was just lumped into Greater London. So the fact that you can read these tips here is - in part - due to the fact that I lobbied for the location to be included.

Well done you for getting Greenwich listed on VT. It's a must-see for anyone interested in Maritime History. Did you know they had a devastating fire on board the Cutty Sark just this year? leyle

I might revisit Greenwich when I'm in London in August. I would like to see the Gypsy Moth - I have Sir Francis' book about the circumnavigation. Nice page - hope you are keeping well.
