The lock-keeper's house and other Amsterdam, Netherlands Things to Do Tips

A very charming little house dating back to 1695. It was originally the house of the lock-keeper (de sluyswacht) who was in charge of controlling the locks of the city. Now it's a caf� but unfortunately I can't tell you how it is because it was closed.

.... it's indeed really modern !!! It contrasts a lot with the rest of the city but even if I understand the necessity of building such appartments due to the housing crisis in A'dam, I would personnally prefer a modern architecture looking less different from the ancient one. But of course, it's only a matter of taste ;-)

It's so nice to saunter along the beautiful canals of Amsterdam. One of the nicest is probably the so-called Herrengracht.

Dam Square: The Dam Square

De Dam

The Dam square is where the dyke ("dam" in NL) of the river Amstel was located. This is actually where the name of Amsterdam comes from (Amstel - dam).
There you can see - among others - the royal palace and the new church (de nieuwe kerk).

Magna Plaza (Old Post Office): Department store

This fantastic department store is located behind the Dam Square. Go have a look, if not to do some shopping, at least to admire the building !

Rijksmuseum

THE museum to see while in Amsterdam. There you'll see some of the most famous masterpieces of painters of the 17th century such as Rembrandt, Vermeer (my favourite !), Frans Hals etc.

The beautiful building itself worths a visit. The view is even nicer from the other side of the main entrance.

Entrance fee : 9 euros

On our way to go to the Vondel parc from the Rijksmuseum, we passed through very nice streets like this one with amazing houses. I'd love to live in that area if I were to live in A'dam ;-)
