Not sure if this should fall under "Must see activity" or "Tourist Trap". I tend to think it's both. The Rideau Canal is one of Ottawa's top attractions and a lot of fun to skate on -- although it's outside, the surface is generally quite smooth.
The only drawback is that the canal can be extremely crowded, especially on weekends and especially during Winterlude (February). It's best to go on a weekday (morning), preferably in January, if you can arrange it. Much more fun and less risk of collision / injury / lawsuit. ;-)
But whenever you go, you must sample a "Beavertail"! Vegetarians, don't worry: It's just like a flat doughnut covered with cinnamon & sugar (or whatever topping you choose).
Skate rental and sharpening are available at huts on the canal, particularly downtown in the area of Laurier Avenue.

My stage debut @ the NAC... ;-)
THE place to come in Ottawa for cultural performances. Music, dance, theatre in both languages, you name it. And even the 'culturally challenged' among us (ie professional wrestling fans and the like) can enjoy "The Nutcracker" at Christmas. ;-) Most importantly, I have personally graced the stage with my presence (for about 30 seconds during graduation last summer).
Tickets here aren't the cheapest but student tickets are available for half-price (must be purchased in person @ the box office with valid student card).
Address: 53 Elgin St.
Directions: On Confederation Square; near the Chateau Laurier and the Rideau Centre. Parking underneath the NAC, but be sure to arrive early.

During the first 3 weeks of May every year, millions of tulips come into bloom in the Capital region. This tradition began in 1945 when Princess Juliana of the Netherlands gave a gift of 100,000 tulips to the City of Ottawa to show her appreciation for their hospitality. The Dutch Royal Family took refuge in Ottawa during the Second World War, and Princess Margriet was born at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, which was temporarily declared Dutch territory so that she could be born on native soil.
The city of Ottawa is always a beautiful place, but during the tulip festival, it is absolutely stunning. There are various events held in connection with the festival, including artisans' fairs and concerts featuring major Canadian talent. This year it looks like Sam Roberts, Big Sugar, Remy Shand, the Rheostatics, Chantal Kreviazuk and the Guess Who (among many others) will be performing. Not to be missed!!!

An interesting and important destination for Canadians and foreign visitors alike. Very moving for those of us, like myself, whose parents are war veterans and who are concerned about the lack of recognition and respect for those who fought for freedom.
Address: 330 Sussex Drive
Directions: Just west of the Byward Market.
