Yes, I grew up living 1 mile outside the provincial park, in the middle of a forest yet (paradoxically) with the beach right outside my back door. Try not to hate me too much. ;-)
This is an incredibly beautiful and peaceful spot, except on holiday weekends when it is overrun with drunken teenagers and tourists. But hey, that's fun too!
Inside the park, there are miles of bike/foot/car trails through what is (as far as I know) the only Carolinian forest in the country (very important according to the environmental folks and therefore very well protected). Tons of wildlife including overly friendly raccoons, a huge population of deer, foxes, the usual squirrels and chipmunks, a few possums imported from the southern USA via the undercarriage of transport trucks, and (it is rumoured) even a few elusive coyotes. Also home to the extremely rare Prothonotary Warbler, for you birdwatchers. An excellent hiking/walking/biking venue for the less fit or adventurous, as there are basically no hills at all in this part of the country.
The campground facilities are quite good, with the main attraction being the beach. The park occupies a peninsula with Lake Erie on the one side and Rondeau Bay on the other. The water is generally quite shallow in this area and you can walk a long way out from the beach before it gets too deep, so it's very child-friendly.
The park is around 20km from the nearest small town (Blenheim) and around 50km from the nearest city (Chatham), so don't come here expecting great nightlife or shopping. It is easily accessible from Hwy 401,however, and definitely well worth a visit. See www.rondeauprovincialpark.ca |
