Room 97: Room 97

Another of the "international hotspots" of Milan thanks to reduced entry prices for Erasmus students, I heard more English spoken here than Italian. Young crowd, mostly under-25s.

Apart from someone nicking my mobile phone the first time I came here, it's not a bad place. Set in the basement like so many Milan clubs, there are no wide spaces so the atmosphere is quite intimate. However, I didn't find it anything special. House/commercial music mainly except for 70s/80s and RnB on Thursdays, which is meant to be the best evening.

Art Café, Milan - Milan

Art Café, Milan

Art Café: more drinks and nibbles The Brera Review

Art Cafe is a pleasant bar in the Brera district, which is one of my three recommendations for evening buffets (see my tips on Art Factory and L'Altro Bastian Contrario for the other two). If you go along between around 6-8pm there is a good selection of free food which customers can help themselves to.

Other than the food I wouldn't say it's anything special (good cocktails, average prices), but in the summer you can sit outside (just mind the mosquitoes after dark, I was eaten alive in July).

Art Factory: Evening drinks and nibbles

A very pleasant custom in Italy is for bars to put out nibbles during the early evening "aperitivo" time. In many bars this simply consists of crisps, olives and nuts, but many will offer small pizza squares or bread and meats, and a few literally lay on a free dinner for their customers, providing salads, pasta dishes and other snacks - you just help yourself!

Art Factory is one such place which doesn't stint on the buffet. As a result it's best to arrive early because although the food is replenished til 8 or 9pm, it can be a challenge to find a table!

Drinks these days in Italy aren't cheap (cocktails are generally €7-8, often €5 during happy hour) but contain more alcohol than cocktails in the UK. However there are lots of good italian wines which are relatively inexpensive.

Chalao bar, Milan - Milan

Chalao bar, Milan

Chalao: 70s Revival style cocktail bar

Chalao is a wine & cocktail bar on the Naviglio Pavese which I've spent many hours in, and which is connected to some of my maddest memories of Milan. It became my "local" for a while (even though I didn't live near it) and as a foreigner it was nice to have a place where I was more than just another nameless customer.

What I really like about it is the decor (it's individual and in my opinion, nicely done - see photo) and the mojitos; they do the best mojitos I've ever tasted! My opinion of one of its joint owners is pretty low considering his behaviour towards some friends of mine, but that's a personal matter and shouldn't spoil your enjoyment of a drink there.

Happy hour runs from 6-9pm and the place closes at 2am. In the summer evenings when the roads along the Navigli are closed to traffic, you can sit outside by the canal, relax and people-watch.

La Casa 139, Milan - Milan

La Casa 139, Milan

The Lab / La Casa 139: chill-out

Like many places in Milan, this small venue is multi-functional; founded in 2000 it sometimes hosts art shows on the ground floor and concerts on the first floor. Usually, however, it's a simple nightclub with house music on the first floor and an ambient chill-out area downstairs.

This place is run by ARCI (Associazione Ricreativa Culturale Italiana) and therefore, works differently from other nightclubs. To enter you have to buy annual membership to ARCI which costs 15 euros, though that's a one-off payment and the drinks aren't expensive. So, if you're just going to go for one night it might not be worth it, but if you go a few times then it's much better value.

As I don't like dancing to house music I preferred sitting downstairs; since it's a small place, the atmosphere is intimate and I found it ideal for sitting and chatting with friends over a drink.

Dress Code: No dress code. The atmosphere is quite informal and I actually managed to chat to some strangers (usually Milan is like london; people keep to themselves, but here I found some friendly people).

Milan - Karma, Borgo del Tempo Perso - Milan

Milan - Karma, Borgo del Tempo Perso

Karma - Borgo del Tempo Perso: it's your destiny!!

Like many nightclubs in Milan you can eat here too; Friday and Saturday nights from 9.30 - 10.45 there's a buffet, and there's a proper restaurant but I'm not rich enough to try that out.

This nightclub comes into its own in summer; in my opinion it's the best.

ok, I haven't finished this tip but I have to come offline, so I'll save it and update later!

Dress Code: Smartish, but I don't think there's an official one.

Address: Via Fabio Massimo, Milan

Directions: This is a bastard to find!! it's near Porto di Mare metro stop (yellow line) on a one-way street.

Shocking Club: not so Shocking!

I came here one Tuesday night and had a fun evening between buffet, dancing and fashion show. Luckily we entered free but full price is 17 euros. Nice nightclub but nothing really special; a bit costly for what's on offer.

Main dancefloor isn't huge but there is some space to sit around the sides. Another bar and more space up in the gallery. The music was a good mix at least.

Café Atlantique: Café Atlantique

I visited this stylish nightclub one Saturday night. Unless you have access to the private areas (Zen Room or colour-themed Rooms; see photos at www.milanotonight.it/album.php/206.html) then there's hardly anywhere to sit and like every nightclub gets packed at the weekend. The cloakroom is in a narrow corridor, which makes putting your coat in a pure nightmare (think sardine tin), and there is a one-way entrance/exit system which makes popping outside for a breath of air almost impossible.

That said, the layout is generally good; the main dancefloor is arranged around a circular bar and HUGE fibre-optic chandelier. The music started well though it went a bit downhill as the evening went on. Nice place but the prices are a little on the high side.

Trattoria Toscana: Trattoria Toscana

This restaurant has a nice atmosphere and clientele. Decent food at fairly reasonable prices, nice decor, good spot for aperitivi: the only blip is walking past the kitchen (through a narrow corridor) to get to the main restaurant area.

Hollywood: Hollywood Hype Hollywood Review

Hollywood is one of the most famous "VIP" nightspots in Milan, but having been there a couple of times I was thoroughly unimpressed. In fact, its most appealing feature was the one-way mirror that allowed the girls to see into the gents' toilet, amusing only because there are a few poor sods unaware of this fact.

The nightclub is underground and quite small, so it gets very stuffy and sometimes claustrophobic. I wasn't fussed about the music, the cloakroom is 3 euros per item and they insist on a separate hanger for EVERY item (including scarves!!) and at 20 euros a head to enter, don't waste your money.
