GEELONG

by ombre - last update: Jun 11, 2006

In land attractions often over looked coastal view

The little brother city

It's fair to say the same would apply in most States the second biggest city in a state especially if in very close distance to the capital is often seen as the brunt of jokes etc from its more vibriant big brother.
Geelong being Victoria's second biggest population base and only an hour from Melbourne has coped heaps
I'm proud to say I used any chance possible and when there is a gellong person present lets just say it was game on.
I refuse nor do I i ntent to take back anything I may have said in order to grab a few cheap laughs at Geelong's expense .
having said that though Geelong over the last five to ten years has in some places under gone wonderful Improvements
Non more so thean the foreshore area which from what I remember before hand was not even worth a look.
The foreshore area is pleasure to check out with some cool eateries and in summer is often very crowded.
there is free swimming pool which the kids just love and also a protected shark proof swimming area the pool.
Not that I ever seen any sharks near by.

staying in Geelong also provides the launching place to some wicked little coastal towns .
there is plenty of decent cheaper style motels and several more up market as well .
The bayside pool is always popular in summer
here's a fact Ombre know's off the top of his head Geelong is the only city outside a capital city to host a team in the Australian rules football league.(australia's national football code)
though some might say freemantle is not a suburb of perth but a seperate city
The Geelong Cats .
They play around about 6 games in Geelong a year now .the rest of their home games are played at bigger seating venue's in melbourne.
Its's often stated the when the cats are playing well Geelong itself is travelling well
For the record the Cats started 2006 on fire but have began to far away .

Pros:"A relaxed smaller city with true country feel"
Cons:"Fair amount of unemployed workers in this city"
In A Nutshell:"If in victoria and staying in melbourne well worth a day tripor more"

Good tips. Corio bay used to be full of harks because of the abitoirs, Redback piders are also there and can use a problem for the unprepared Watch for stingrays in the shallows!Volker4532
