Getting TO/AROUND: In MOST of my pages I say some things about taxi drivers sandards.(OFTEN THEY ARE YOUR FIRST CONTACT AFTER HOPPING OFF A PLANE) I have to say some thing about our own cabbies.there are over 3000 in melbourne area ,some speak english lol.
It is a really mixed bag I must say as in general most are not very friendly and about half would have no idea which direction you want to go in.
One thing I will say is they do have to use the metre.
Australia has strict laws driver have to follow.

most cabbies here think the world owes them some thing and not many seem to be very happy about doing there job.
once you leave melbourne Airport now you have to pay a one dollar taxi levy which was cause of much protest by cabbies as they did not want passangers to have to pay this fee.

Getting TO/AROUND: For me the best way to get to melbourne is by push bike but I live here.for anyone from overseas flying is really the only choice unless you have forever.melbourne international airport offers many airline which fly direct from melbourne to your destination or worst case is to fly to sydney and take a conecting flight either from your international carrier or through domestic airlines.by car melbourne is about 11 hours from sydney and 9 from adelaide.you can also travel by bus or train to these other cities from melbourne .
The best way to get around melbourne if you dont have a car is either walk or use the public transport all day travel card will cost you about 4.60 for a zone one pass which basically covers the city area and inner suburbs.the best thing is the one ticket can be used on trams ,trains and buses.Most cabbies speak some english ha ha and in general wont drive you the longest way to where you want to go.Below is a pic of the crown casino on the banks of the yarra river.I wish i could say i took it myself but it it is from the crown casino web site.
