For a long time, I didn't even think, I was missing something. I was doing my everyday things, meeting with everyday people, worriyng my everyday worries, thinking my everyday thoughts... Everything was so clear, no fuss, no mess. Until one day, something changed. It was one day, more than eleven years ago, I began to realise that there's "another world" out there, it actually exists, with real life and people in it and it's not all that bad. This was very big discovery for me. I was born and raised in Soviet Union, the smallest one of the Baltic States, in Estonia. Living as a tiny part of USSR, I was made to believe, that even if there happens to be "something", "somewhere" out there, somewhere in the west in particular, it's all very bad and by all means, it's the enemy. When we gained our Independence again and were finally free from the Soviet Union, free to live in our very own Republic of Estonia... I can't even begin to describe, what was going on here. We were free and we could actually travel! The outside world, about which we had almost no idea, had opened up for us and was waiting for us to go and discover! For some time it was all very confusing, seeing people going abroad and coming back, talking about what they saw and experiensed, they all were so happy and at the same time, so very depressed too... I can't really remember the moment, when I decided that I want to see the "outside world", but ever since I decided that, I have never given up on this dream of mine. I've given it my heart and soul. I've seen some places by now, met many people, seen good things and many bad ones too, but never ever have I been able to get this dream out of me, even though I have sometimes wanted it badly, because I didn't think I could take it no more. After a while, I've always been ready to "go" again. I'm preparing to write a little about the people I've met, in the few countries I've been to, in the nearest future. I hope, you'll come back one day when here's more to read... Until then, take care of yourself and Thank You for stepping by. |
| | Estonian flag. It has been through so much and and has a long history. I love it. It is for me the most beautiful flag in the world!
By the end of the 19th century, the blue, black and white became widely accepted as a national Estonian flag. When the flag was hoisted to the top of the Tall Herman tower (in Toompea) dominating the whole Tallinn, the tower itself gained a strong symbolic value for the Estonians. On 27 June 1922 the Estonian Parliament declared the blue-black-white the official state flag. After the Soviet occupation in June 1940, the blue-black-white flag, and, indeed, the mere combination of these colours, was banned. Many people were persecuted simply for keeping and hiding the flag or using the colours. But the colours were never forgotten and the struggle to bring the national colours back into use marked the beginning of a renewed struggle for independence in the late 1980s. They were an important weapon in the bloodless fight for the restoration of the independence of Estonia, which was finally won in August 1991. |
