A Little Town With a Lot of History

The Bluebonnets are gorgeous! The festival will be April 12th & 13th but the flowers are to be enjoyed NOW!
Chappell Hill was a thriving community in the mid 1800's. It was founded in 1852 by Mary Halloran who named the town after her grandfather. Mr. Chappell's only claim to fame was the fact that he killed the last known buffalo in Washington County, Texas. The town has a bed and breakfast that is the original but restored Stagecoach Inn. It was here that the railway stopped and people were required to take stage coaches to travel further West. chappell Hill is only 19 miles from the birthplace of Texas, Washington on the Brazos. It was there that Texas signed the documents declaring it independent of Mexico. General Sam Houston, Davy Crockett, and William B. Travis are a few of the well known people to have made their homes in the Chappell Hill area. The local cemetary bears witness to the many people of Chappell Hill and the terrible yellow fever epedemic that litterally destroyed the town. There are serveral B & B's in Chappell Hill and four restaurants to accomodate tourists. There are nature trails at the Clarann Plantation and a wonderful setting at the three story Browning Plantation which is a Bed and Breakfast and boasts a widow's walk. Chappell Hill is only 65 miles from Houston on Hwy 290. It is fairly centrally located between Austin, San Antonio and Houston. the Bluebonnet Festival in the Spring and the Scaredrow Festival the 2nd week of October are good times to visit Chappell Hill.
