Hida-Furukawa

The reason the word "Hida" is attached to most of these places is because it is the old Japanese name now known as the Gifu area.
This town is has many streams and storehouses(kura). In January, they have an event called "Santeramairi", which you go to three different temples-Eiko-ji, Shinsho-ji and Honko-ji to thank Shiran Shonin for his struggles. It is also thought that if you go to these three temples with someone that you like, you will be "musubu" connected and a good relationship will follow.

Hida-Takayama

This town has three streets filled with traditional shops, restaurants and breweries. The breweries have these huge round balls of cedar frond hanging in front.

Shirakawa Village

This village located in the Shokawa Valley. Has houses that are shaped like people praying called "gasshozukuri". The roofs are angled very steeply to keep snow off of them. Since the winters are very harsh, and fresh vegetables are hard to come by, people eat a lot of tsukemono-pickled vegetables.

Great tips. Thank you! I have this Sarubobo for over a year now, but never knew its name, nor what it is supposed to do. I will buy some for my sisterand friends on our next visit in two weeks.
