Lonely Planet Guidebook speaks of a shocking lack of budget accommodation in Niamey, but apparently isn't aware of the existence of the Village Chinoise Guesthouse!
It was excellent local advice after I found all budget and mid range guidebooks tips either full or not taking backpackers.
The rooms are basic and the bathroom (with not much water) is shared with one neighbour, but you will appreciate the airco, especially when you want to rest between the impossible-to-stay-outside-hours of the day. The double rooms with airco are about EUR 10/night while the fan version is only a little cheaper.
Also you might check out the
Allemange-Niger Cooporation Resthouse, in Plateau area, that has a couple of excellent rooms with fan for EUR 8/night, but it’s often full. It’s located 50 meters beyond the
AFVP-Resthouse, that doesn’t take ordinary travellers but was recommended in the old LP Africa on a Shoestring 9th edition (check out its map).
If you can spend
$25-$40/night, you can check out popular hotels like Sahal, Terminus or Maoury. However you might want to make reservations in advance, since we found them all full when we arrived late in the evening (Hotel Sahal was friendly enough to invite us to sleep in their garden for free, including plenty of moskitoos).

Directions: Village Chinoise faces the Central Stadium and it’s easy to take a (shared) taxi to/from there. Part of the complex is a small store with freezer and a bar that serves food too in the evenings.
