Turkmenistan Travel Guide: 200 reviews and 607 photos

UPDATE FEB'2007:
DUE TO THE RECENT DEATH OF MR. NIYAZOV, IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE THE COUNTRY WON'T CHANGE, SINCE HIS PERSONAL AND UNIQUE WAY OF GOVERNING THE COUNTRY WAS HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL FOR EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED IN TURKMENISTAN.

THEREFORE, SEVERAL TIPS ESPECIALLY IN THE TOURIST TRAP SECTION MAY WELL BE OUTDATED AND DESCRIBE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT ARE NOT THERE ANYMORE -AT LEAST THAT IS WHAT I HOPE!
I SINCERLY WISH THAT SOMEONE ELSE WILL CREATE A MORE ACTUAL PAGE AND KICK ME OFF #1 POSITION IN THE TURKMENISTAN VT TRAVEL GUIDE ASAP. I ENCOURAGE YOU TO CONTACT TO HAVE YOUR OR SOMEONE ELSE'S TURKMENISTAN PAGE RATED.
...TX FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING AND COOPERATION...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My 2001 visit to Turkmenistan was a unique and memorable travel experience, though “not really” satisfying –to use an understatement.

Not only I was sick and alone for 4 days while staying in the dormitory of a psychiatric institute in Ashgabat where nobody spoke any English, the lack of having my own transportation to visit the rural parts, the continuous fishing for bribes by police and train attendants, the lack of being free to go where I wanted and finally the lack of food in some places all made travelling a hard and -too much of it- an unpleasant experience.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:experience something unusual,
  • Cons:for a backpacker: about everything else...
  • In a nutshell:Try to go rural to see the real Turkmen culture!

interesting page! i was just reading about the last "idea" of Niyazov to "kill" the elderly by cutting out their pension and asking others to return the money! thanks for the great info:)

Niyazov is as good as dead soon... This guy ranks up there with Saddam and The Kims. I'd love to see such a strange place though.
