DUE TO THE RECENT DEATH OF MR. NIYAZOV, IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE THE COUNTRY WON'T CHANGE, SINCE HIS PERSONAL AND UNIQUE WAY OF GOVERNING THE COUNTRY WAS HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL FOR EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED IN TURKMENISTAN.
THEREFORE, SEVERAL TIPS ESPECIALLY IN THE TOURIST TRAP SECTION MAY WELL BE OUTDATED AND DESCRIBE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT ARE NOT THERE ANYMORE -AT LEAST THAT IS WHAT I HOPE!

|  | My 2001 visit to Turkmenistan was a unique and memorable travel experience, though “not really” satisfying –to use an understatement.
Not only I was sick and alone for 4 days while staying in the dormitory of a psychiatric institute in Ashgabat where nobody spoke any English, the lack of having my own transportation to visit the rural parts, the continuous fishing for bribes by police and train attendants, the lack of being free to go where I wanted and finally the lack of food in some places all made travelling a hard and -too much of it- an unpleasant experience. |
