The rural settlement of Widnaba, situated in the Red Volta River Valley, is the latest addition (as per 2004) on the list of participating villages in Ghana's superb Eco- and Community Based Tourism Project.
Actually, I appeared to be the first not to the Project related traveller to experience the project after realisation.
It had taken Peace Corps volunteers and other participants more than 2 years to overcome several difficulties and finally had the brochures printed and distributed.
The Red Volta Project was originally meant to be developed in another village, but at a point of almost completion, a dispute arose with the local Chief, and the Project was dismissed. The welcoming Chief of Widnaba was more cooperative.
A lovely situated Visitors Centre was build, local guides were trained and some kind of path was cleared in the hills.
Everything was ready to receive the first guests, when the heavy rains destroyed much of the 14 km. dirt track to Widnaba. No cars could pass; no funds for repairing...
so I rented a bike from the local Peace Corps and cycled down there...it was great! I recommend to stay overnight and experience Widnaba and the Kusaasi people!
