Things To Do: Take time for the ride...much to see

On our way through the Rift Valley to Lake Natron I enjoyed the scenery a lot.
On the picture we paused to take a look in a deep crater, while other times it were the African trees like massive baobabs and fine thorn trees that astonished us.
Most of the land was just uninhabited wilderness. Just a few Maasai walking around with their cattle.

Things To Do: Wildlife just along the way

On the way to Lake Natron we encountered a lot of wildlife.
Although this area is not especially protected, animals must feel safe. Nobody seems to bother them, at least not the resident Maasai, who are only interested in cows and goats.
We saw loads of zebra, wildebeest and gazelle and also some ostrich and giraffe.

Things To Do: Flamingos at Lake Natron

Thousands of flamingos feed and breed at tranquil and scenic Lake Natron, that is surrounded by escarpments and of course the volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai.
Unfortunately we arrived at the Lake about by noon when the heat was just unbearable, so we didn't spend much time there. Our main goal was the volcano that we were going to climb tonight, so we opted for a brief siesta.
But for those with more time, and possibly own transport, it's a great area to explore!

Things To Do: White water swimming at the falls

A not too easy half hour hike from the Campsite along and through the river brings you to some attractive waterfalls.
They feed the river where it's nice "white water swimming" and showering (very welcome in the enormous heat).
You can find some nice stones and fossils here as well if you're lucky.
