Ho, Hohoe and Volta Region: the perfect start

by Bonobo2005 - last update: Nov 19, 2003

You're welcome...
The part of Volta Region around Ho and Hohoe offered me the first travel experiences in Ghana and they exceeded my expectations by far!

Not that there’s a lot of spectacular things to see or do, but for a traveller who just arrived in Ghana, it’s probably the best start he can get.

Of course I heard of the cliché that Ghana is amongst the friendliest and welcoming countries in Africa. After these first 2 weeks in Volta Region, I could only confirm it. Now, after spending 8 weeks throughout Ghana , I still regard this cliché most true in exactly this part of Volta Region!!

True,…it’s the Ewe people that are quite exceptional here, but my enthusiasm is also fed by the natural attractions and the variety of options for travellers.

Volta Region around Ho and Hohoe is hilly, relatively cool and covered with tropical forests and savannahs. The countryside hosts 5 attractive waterfalls, that are all feasible daytrips from Ho or Hohoe.
In addition, not less than 6 villages in this region have been developed as a Community Based Ecotourism Site, where you can stay overnight, join interesting tours and mingle with villagers. Many pretty villages can be reached by tro-tro (bushtaxi’s), but scenic bushpaths are a great alterative for hikers.

From my experience, Volta Region is completely hassle free, including the towns. As long as you stay polite, respect local customs, and don’t show your wealth too much, you can go where you like and do what you like and always be welcomed !!

Note:
Although I created this tips under Hohoe, this page is meant to cover whole area around Ho and Hohoe between the Togolese border and Lake Volta, where I travelled around during 2 weeks. I would have preferred Ho, being capital of the region, but Ho doesn’t exist in the VT database (yet).

Note also that the pictures of the waterfalls on this page were taken at the end of the raining season (August); they might look different at other times of the year!!
