Fisherman's Wharf: Once is more than enough
  • Tip Rating:
  • San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf

  • Fisherman's Wharf, Ghiradelli Sq, Pier 39 etc.
I guess have to be experienced once, and please enjoy them if you do.

At Least Do This: don't waste a lot of money on the food
Alternative: Scoma's is ok for seafood on the wharf (view is good)..

Or get one of those sourdough bread "bowl-loaves" with chowder in it for lunch at Boudin Bakery

Hey, lots of people do fisherman's wharf the first time they goto sf and I hope they have a good time, but 4 me once was enough.

Not Worth It!: Used to be good

  • Rose Pistola used to (maybe 5-6 years ago) be a good ligurian style italian restaurant in North Beach.

Used to serve a delicious pasta liguria dish with crustaceans in delicious green pesto-style liguria sauce.

Nowadays imho it is overpriced with average-to-mediocre food and service.

It's too bad, and I hate writing this because I used to love this place and take people here with pride all the time.

As Mike LaFontaine (Fred Willard) says often in 'A Mighty Wind:'

    "wha' happened? "

At Least Do This: Have a drink and/or appetizer, then split.
Alternative: Here's an alternative: FIX IT.

To all: PLEASE let me know if they get good again so I can take this down.

There are so many many better and less expensive places to eat in North Beach and Chinatown within walking distance.

Haight Street: It is what it is
  • Tip Rating:
  • San Francisco Haight Street
  • fall into the gap

  • I still like the Haight & Cole Valley.

I love the Victorian houses, and the area holds lots of great memories circa '66 / '67.

But Haight St. is imho sometimes a semi-pathetic & commercial shell
of its old pre '67 self, and left me kind of sad this last trip.

I think the pic says it all.

"Your revolution is over, Mr. Lebowski. Condolences. The bums lost!! "

At Least Do This: Walk around and soak in the commercial opportunism.
Marvel at the power pop culture & media possess (if we let it) to screw anything up.
Alternative: Buy a slice of pizza or a Ben & Jerry's and get a block or two (e.g. Page and Cole) off Haight to enjoy the beautiful Victorian style houses.

Get an online Haight history map and hunt up some of the old ghosts from 40 years ago.
