  • Take a day and a quick train trip from A'Dam Centraal through Haarlem & Overveen to the beach at Zandvoort.

If you are lucky and the weather is as beautiful as it was for me, you will enjoy it very much.

On the train back you can:
    wish you had a house in Overveen;
then stop in Haarlem for an excellent steak dinner at Wilma and Albert's & a side trip to Willie Wortel's.

An excellent day trip to escape Amsterdam for a change of pace.

    Cycling: Rent a bike - a must

  • The first thing I will always do after I get off the train at Centraal, is walk to frederic on Brouwersgracht and rent a bicycle. In Sept. '03 they were only 40 Euros/week.

Especially during good weather, what could be more fun than to rent a bike and go for a ride in & around Amsterdam?
There are lots of places to rent an affordable bike all over town.

Frederic rents the plain, simple old black bikes most Hollanders ride in the city, so you don't stand out like a tourist on your bright orange MacBike, inviting the junkies to trash and/or steal your transportation.

The VVV tourist info office outside Centraal station has bike path maps.

Even some hotels rent them to pick up and return it to the lobby (hopefully.... bicycle theft is so common in A'Dam it's almost comical... ).

In Amsterdam, bikes are given respect, their own lanes & traffic lights.

Just be cautious/careful & use your bell as the tourists not used to bike traffic won't see (or hear) you coming

If the sun's out and the wind isn't blowing hard, you will be in Nederlands-bicycle heaven.

The "frederic" website listed below is where I rented mine (BROUWERSGRACHT 78).

Make sure to get a couple good locks and lock it up tight to a bridge or something very sturdy

Doei. Pedal 2da metal.......ching!.... ching... ching....

Canals / Amstel River / Harbour: Excellent A'Dam travel journals at Noe Hill

  • Great ADam travel journals from
  • Louis and Noe Hill

  • One of the best travel journal websites I have found is Noe Hill.

The writing is flawless and extremely interesting and informative as they share their experiences in Amsterdam, Paris/Loire, their home town of San Francisco.. etc. These well-written travelogue "essays" are accompanied by some great photos. Check this site out. I love Noe Hill.

One journal there I recommend is entitled "Dutch in 3 weeks" by Louis H. Bryan, one hell of a writer. (ahendley used to login at VT and has excellent Venezia pages and photographs at Noe).

    UPDATE: 8/19/04:
Just received a letter and this new photo from Louis himself.

This made my day and I am looking forward to seeing more from Louis and the boys at Noe Hill.

UPDATE: 1/31/05: Had a fabulous lunch of dimsum in San Francisco this weekend with Louis. Finally met him, and he is even more fun in person.

Louis is now updating his new journal "Amsterdam by Segway" here:
    Amsterdam by Segway by Louis

Louis (in mijn slecht, sh#&ty Nederlands):
"Mijn vriendelijke groeten en ik wens u 100 jaar van gezondheid en geluk.."

Highly evocative texts and photos! I think it's great that you got to meet Louis H. Bryan. And yours is the only Theda Bara quote that I have seen thus far on VT. I went to Amsterdam in May, rented a bike and had a fine time riding around.
