If you're traveling with a partner (or a small group of 8 or less) or even alone, check out the apartments, studios, and houseboats available from CityMundo. Great deals and wonderful flats and apartments can be found all over the city. I rented a one-bedroom apartment near the Jordaan with a kitchen, laundry, and best of all, a terrace and loved it. Much better than a hotel. My "landlord" was very cool and extremely helpful. No problems, and a great experience. .......... gezellig......
Unique Qualities: If there's 2 or more people, it's a better deal than hotels. Some are right on the canals, or if it's a houseboat IN the canal. Worth a look. I doubt if (even when going to Amsterdam by myself) I will ever get a hotel room again. If you rent a bike (frederic) and an apartment (CityMundo) I doubt you can have a better time in Amsterdam.

Tulip Inn Dam Square has one of the better locations in the city. You are in the middle of everything, yet on a fairly quiet little street (Gravenstraat, one of my favorites) behind the new church. Rooms are clean and good-sized for Amsterdam, staff is very helpful, friendly and professional. There is a lift/elevator. Small bar in lobby is open effectively 24/7 as desk clerk(s) double as "bartender." Breakfast is nothing special. Maybe skip it and go 1 block over to Nieuwendijk/Dam shops or better still, walk west down Gravenstraat across Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal and Singel to a cafe on Oude Leliegracht. A little higher priced these days but the xtra Euros you pay/night are for the amazing location. If you're planning on walking a lot in Amsterdam center from Jordaan to Red Light, this is a good choice. Three-star hotel... maybe a little pricey, but worth it. Bottom line: not cheap (expensive with dollar-to-euro rate of 1/1.5), but I liked it, great location, I liked the staff, and I would stay there again.
Unique Qualities: A good hotel, clean comfortable, with a location just a block off Dam Square and Nieuwendijk. Close to everything. Lots of info at Tulip in Dam Square WEBSITE

Address: 12-16 Gravenstraat Amsterdam 1012 NM
Directions: Behind the New Church on Gravenstraat between Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal and Nieuwendijk / Damrak. Tell the cab driver it's behind the Nieuwkerk or (like mine) he won't find it quickly.

Citymundo: The terrace after midnight

After midnight near the Jordaan, looking from the terrace of my apartment at Westerkerk tower.
Unique Qualities: It chimes every 15 minutes, longer each time as it approaches the hour. Midnight is a symphony. The first night it kept me awake, but I got used to it after a couple of days and looked forward to it. Westerkerk is 1/2 block south of Anne Frank Huis, so Anne must have listened to the same bells every 15 minutes while she and here family were in hiding to mark the slow passage of time. " Father, Mother and Margot still can't get used to the chiming of the Westertoren clock, which tells us the time every quarter of an hour. Not me, I liked it from the start; it sounds so reassuring, especially at night. " from Anne Franks diary

I think it's great that you got to meet Louis H. Bryan. And yours is the only Theda Bara quote that I have seen thus far on VT. I went to Amsterdam in May, rented a bike and had a fine time riding around. |
