St. Augustine Beach

Having heard of St. Augustine from my history classes and how it was so old, it was a treat to finally be able to visit there. Old for a location in the new world that is. St. Augustine, like many points along the coast, has been under the control of several countries. The old fort was built by one of those countries in an attempt to maintain control of the area. Learning the history of the fort and surrounding area gives me some feeling for how hard life was for people trying to build a new life and a new town so far from their homeland. It didn’t matter where the people came from, the conditions were just as hard on all of them.

This photo is of St. Augustine Beach with St. Augustine lying to the right. As you can see from some of our pictures, the beach was badly eroded. It's more shell than sand at this time.

The beach at St. Augustine Beach in 2005 was almost gone. The beach had a red tint to it because of the bits of shells covering it. The beach was crunchy underfoot and not much fun to walk on. You had to wear shoes or the shells would cut your feet. I was out on the beach at dusk and stepped in a patch of something black and sticky which turned out to be oil either washed up from the sea floor or from a ship out at sea.

This is the beach in 2006 after "beach restoration" was completed after our 2005 visit. In the distance, you can just make out the the wooden beach access platform at our hotel. The steps from the level part down to the beach are buried in the sand. The sand at that point had been built up about 15 feet. The beach was wide and the sand was soft. Nice.

It's our 2008 Florida trip and I'm sorry to say I didn't get a picture to update the beach view. It was hard to tell much change from 2007. It looked like about half the beach restoration had already returned to the sea. Still a wonderful beach but this year it was too windy for me.
