Eisriesenwelt

by endrem - last update: Nov 1, 2002

Eisriesenwelt is the largest ice cave on the world. It is really beautiful, if you are around Salzburg you must see it. It is around 40 kms south from Salzburg. By car you can go on the A10 highway, or take the train from Salzburg.
From the car park you walk some 10 minutes to the cable car.

The cable car is also a special one, the steepest I've ever seen. It does 500 metres height difference in a couple of minutes. The view from those cars really rocks.
The car takes you to a Hütte, which is a kind of little mountain restaurant. From here again a 10 minutes walk to the cave.

It's also possible to get to the entrance area of the cave on foot, but it takes more than one and a half hour, and I guess, having seen those paths, it's quite tiring...
The cave was discovered in 1879 by Anton Posselt, a natural scientist from Salzburg, who pushed 200 metres into the darkness of the caves and officially "discovered" the Eisriesenwelt. The cave was known by hunters and poachers before.

To visit the cave you have to pay 16€, which includes the usage of the cable-car.
