The first written notices about Gdansk, the capital of Pomerania Region date back to year 997. They are related to the visit of St. Voytech. In 1308 it was occupied by Teutonic Knights.
Centuries passed and after World War I Gdansk became Free City, a strange form of government - neither Polish nor German It is important to stress that it was in Westerplatte, a district of Gdansk, where Polish soldiers fought against the Nazis for the longest time before Poland's official surrender in September 1939.
In 1945 the city returned to Poland. It was totally demolished by Soviet Red Army.
You've probably heard about Solidarnosc (Solidarity), an important social movement and trade union. It was born in Gdansk in 1980 and begun the process of destruction of communism in Central Europe. That's why Gdansk is very important - simple as that :) |
