Modern Delphi, a small town near ancient Delphi is not really interesting. It consists of two major streets, several hotels and a huge number of expensive shops. Delphi is generally an expensive place, for example food here is 100% more expensive than in Athens or Thessaloniki.

Luckily nobody comes to Delphi to buy food only. Right across the corner there is ancient Delphi. We were not able to enter the Museum as it was closed for modernization. The only room open was the one where the famous statue of victorious charioteer was presented. Sorry for the faulty picture – the crowd was moving and so was my camera.

The first remains of human activities here date back to 12th century BC. In 6th century BC Delphi become an independent state and the most important sanctuary in Greece.

Ancient Delphi is one of the most beautiful places in Greece. It is located in the valley of Itea, about 180 km from Athens. In the morning and in the evening the valley is covered with shadow and the sun drops gold and pink reflections on tops of the rocks.

Delphi is the ancient center of the Earth - omphalos. It was here that Pythia sat over a hole in the rock, inhaled and answered to pilgrims' questions. Delphi was also the place of cult of god Apollo. Legend says that he came to Delphi as a dolphin and that's how the place gained its name.

The ruins of ancient Delphi are on the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

The best time to visit Delphi is in the morning when there are no large crowds of tourists.
