One of the biggest tourist attractions of Greece. The name 'Meteora' means 'rocks hanging in the air'.
The first monastries were built in middle ages. We are still not sure how they were constructed as it seems almost impossible to carry such massive loads of stone up those high rocks.
In 10th century the first monks settled down in Meteora finding a place to live in cold and hardly accessible caves. On your way through the hills and rocks of Meteora you can observe the remains of wooden scaffoldings built in those caves by early dwellers.
Meteora is also a very popular place among rock climbers. Some of them can be seen as small dots on the huge walls :) |
History Behind Meteora The first cloister of the Holy Meteora, the Holy Ghost was established here by Barnabas. It was accompanied by severa catities that served as homes for the first settlers here.
A tiny ascetic state was created in Meteora in 12th century with the Church of Mother of God as center of worship. |
