Crete - the place to be

by gale.blog.pl - last update: Nov 1, 2006

It's all about the atmosphere

"Out in the dark blue sea there lies a land called Crete, a rich and lovely land, washed by the waves on every side, Densely peopled and boasting ninety cities. Each of the several races of the island has its own language. First there are the Achaeans; then the native Cretans, proud of their native stock; next the Kydonians" Homer

The first time I went to Crete was fall 2001. In 2002 I decided that there would be no better place I could go for a late vacation than Crete. And that was right!

The atmosphere, the people, the views, the nature - all that makes Crete the perfect place to spend your holiday... and your money ;-)

I'd like to thank all of you for visiting my humble Crete pages and for rating my tips and pics. It was an extremely great pleasure to be rated 'Top 5' tipmaker :-)

All so beautiful

Crete seems so beautiful to me. Even if it rains heavily and you cannot move from your hotel room, there's always something that catches our eye. I strongly wish you the same!

Greece's largest and most southerly island boast a fantastic mountain range running from west to east. The landscape of Crete varies from plateaus and beautiful beaches to deep and fascinating gorges, such as the Gorge of Samaria.

Crete - History in a Nutshell

Crete is known as the cradle of European civilization. Cretean society was definetely dominant in the Aegean world. In 3rd Century BC Minoan culture grew to its best and Crete became heart of marine trade. Peaceful Minoan culture survidev a number of severe cataclisms. After the eruption of a volcano in Thira, Crete got under control of Mycenae Greeks. That was when Greek language came to Crete. Minoan Greeks most probably came to Crete from Anatolia. Island's dwellers had strong and fruitful relationships with Egyptians and Asians.

Control over Crete was performed by Greeks, Romans, Saracens, Emperor of Bysantium, Venetians. For over 200 years Crete was occupied by Turks. In 2nd World War the island and its brave nation suffered from severe Nazi attacks.
