Where I Come From, Where I Live

by gale.blog.pl - last update: Jun 22, 2003

Geopolitical Situation

Poland has a difficult and challenging geopolitical situation. It's right in the center of geographical Europe, between West and East.

Such neighbourhood has never been easy for us. Our history is full of wars and occupations. There were long years in our past when there was no Poland in the map of Europe.

During your trip to our country you'll see numerous monuments commemorizing uprisings and national heroes.

A Land Of Opportunity

In 1989 Poland got rid of communist rule and started adopting free market economy. I'm afraid that most people expected that the country and its economy would bloom overnight. But this did not happen.

That is why many Poles seem to be frustrated while many others rolled their sleeves and started working hard for their present and future, remembering the past.

Today (I'm writing this on June 7th 2003) we are voting in our EU referendum. It's a very important day!

What To See

We have sea, we have lakes, we have plains, we have mountains, we have woods and we have wildlife. We have castles and museums, great pieces of architecture and off-the-beaten-path places.

All of the above worth seing!

Please also refer to my pages on specific places in Poland, you'll certainly find useful information there.

C'mon! People are expected to pay for use of most toilets in France and Germany, even department stores in these countries expect you to leave around 20 euro cents... so Poland can't really be picked on in this respect.

Last year (2004) I have seen a toilet cashier in Czech Prague, (and she has asked me if I had really paid the fee).
