A medieval town !

by Lucky79 - last update: Mar 20, 2003

The medieval town of Regensburg will transport you "back in time" -- without a time machine! Relics of the Stone age and Celtic times reside beside early Bavarian and Carolingian remains. Roman masonry can be found beside the road and splendid buildings in all styles : Romanesque to Classical - bear witness to its fantastic two-thousand-year old history.

Located on the Eastern side of the River Danube, just beyond the Bavarian Forest, the Medieval Metropolis of Regensburg awaits your sightseeing pleasure and enjoyment.

The imposing Porta Pratetoria, built of massive blocks of stone, was the northern-most gate of the city’s Roman fortress.

Almost inconspicuous, in comparison, the Memorial tablet to Sarmannina, a simple Roman matron, marks the first record of Christianity north of the Alps.

Squares abound, each flanked by palaces of the first Bavarian dukes and Carolingian kings.

The town Hall, with its great assembly room which later became the meeting place for the Perpetual Imperial Diet.

The churches, the most fabulous structures, and above all --the Gothic cathedral.

Patrician mansions set in quiet palestial sites with "almost Italian" qualities.

Regensburg's ancient stone bridge, now nearly 900 years old.
