  • Although they’re a bit off the beaten path, the Descanso Gardens are worth a visit. They’re not the most beautiful botanical gardens I’ve visited, but they are unique. The 160 acre facility features several different gardens, but they allow the flora and fauna to integrate into the natural surroundings, rather than training the plants into individual areas. There are paved paths throughout the gardens as well as less manicured walking trails for hikers to escape into the nature a little more organically. Descanso Gardens also features exhibits by local artists in the Boddy House, a gift shop near the front entrance and several cafes scattered throughout. Check out the website for live concert schedules and other special events such as their annual plant sale.

Hours: Open everyday but Christmas 9 am to 5 pm
    Admission: General $7. Senior/Students $5. Children (5 to 12 years) $2, Children under 5 free.
    Free Parking
Tram $3. Enchanted Railroad $2 (Saturdays and Sundays)

Off The Beaten Path: New Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • I am not religious in the least, but on a trip downtown we stopped into the New Cathedral, a architecturally stunning Catholic Church. If you’re into architecture it’s worth a look.

Nice touch with my old stomping grounds. Spent many a night at Dodger stadium. Birthday greetings from Alaska!

Thanks for the intro to LA, hoping to visit California in 2009. Your description of transport and urban planning sounds a bit like Manchester, UK.

Hello Hollie. I really enjoyed reading your LA pages... great info, nice photos, etc. Universal Studios are also coming to Dubai, so I'm really looking forward to that! Greetings from the desert :-) Jess
